A membrane disc is a flat filtration medium installed in a reusable holder. The membrane performs separation, a support carries differential pressure, and a gasket defines the active area. Correct assembly prevents bypass. Discs allow convenient material changes and retrieval of retained particles, but introduce cleaning, handling and sealing steps that a preassembled filter avoids.
| Selection factor | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Disc diameter | The membrane must cover the sealing region without folding at its edge. |
| Support | Thin films need suitable support; install composite membranes in the specified orientation. |
| Analytical target | Filtrate analysis prioritises recovery, while retained-particle analysis also depends on membrane background. |

Establish pressure gradually and inspect for leakage; bubbles and dry areas reduce useful filtration area.
Record sample identity and orientation, limiting contact and uncontrolled drying before examination.
Check disc size, support and gasket sealing before attributing the result to membrane retention.
Only with a suitable validated method. Restored flow does not establish restored retention or analytical cleanliness.
