Process & filtration objectives
A formulated liquid may be a solution or contain suspended particles, droplets or macromolecules that belong in the product. Identify the dosage form and critical ingredients before filtration so normal formulation structure is not treated as contamination.
Compounding, prefiltration and filtration before filling have distinct roles. Beyond particle objectives, assess adsorption of low-concentration ingredients, assembly hold-up and the effect of contact materials on the formulation.
Typical process pathway
- 01
Define the formulation
List active ingredients, excipients, solvents and dispersion state, identifying components intended to pass or remain.
- 02
Compounding and pretreatment
Observe loading after dissolution or mixing, distinguishing undissolved material, normal dispersed phases and foreign matter.
- 03
Filtration
Evaluate flow, adsorption and material effects at the actual batch size and duration, including initial and final samples.
- 04
Connection to filling
Include downstream piping, sampling and hold time, maintaining consistent records for the batch and filter assembly.
This is a typical task pathway. Confirm sequence, equipment and operating conditions for the project.
Filtration points & selection rationale
| Process point | Filtration task | Selection rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Compounding outlet | Manage unwanted particles introduced during preparation | Avoid unintended capture of useful suspended particles or droplets. |
| Prefilter position | Share loading with the downstream stage | Assess whether prefilter media adsorb ingredients or add background. |
| Before filling | Control liquid against defined quality objectives | Connect product-specific validation, assembly connections and retained-volume assessment. |
Verification & operating records
| Evaluation item | Recording & comparison |
|---|---|
| Ingredient recovery | Compare critical low-concentration components before and after filtration, including first discharge and batch-end samples. |
| Contact materials | Relate material documentation to formulation, contact duration and treatment conditions, rather than membrane name alone. |
| Process records | Retain flow, differential pressure, batch volume, assembly identity and applicable integrity-test records. |
Application questions
Can solutions, emulsions and suspensions use the same approach?
Not by default. The dispersed phase may be part of the product, requiring assessment of how filtration changes its structure.
Does nominal pore size establish final-product sterility?
No. Product suitability, filter integrity and the complete manufacturing process require relevant validation; a selection guide cannot substitute for that evidence.
